The Customer Identity Cloud platform can now reference NFTs as profile data and as a means to grant access.

The [Auth0 Lab team](http://labs.auth0.com/) has released a pair of [Marketplace integrations](https://auth0.com/marketplace) bringing more [Web3 capabilities](https://marketplace.auth0.com/categories/web3) to the Okta Customer Identity Cloud ecosystem. As the Web3 ecosystem matures, we’re finding that on-chain data, like NFTs (non-fungible tokens), can be used in the identity ecosystem. 

[Our integration](https://marketplace.auth0.com/integrations/auth-0-inc-fetch-nfts) is a simple NFT fetch [Action](https://auth0.com/docs/customize/actions) that retrieves a list of NFTs the user owns. With them, you can make all sorts of IAM-based decisions. ## NFTs in Identity and Access Management (IAM)

By now, you’ve probably heard of NFTs. If not, here [is a helpful explainer](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/03/18/technology/nft-guide.html). At their core, NFTs are digitally transferable tokens. Tokens have a long history in identity and access management. They are the keystone of authorization in many apps, primarily through the issuance of [JSON web tokens](https://jwt.io/). 

NFTs could be a big extension to token-based IAM. NFTs are flexible, secure, and easily transferable by their nature of using blockchain consensus algorithms to establish ownership and transference. Like with cryptocurrencies, only a specific private key in a wallet can prove ownership. They can help organizations manage capacity problems because you can limit the number of NFTs you mint. This scarcity helps manage supply while still allowing for a robust secondary market. This makes them ideal for ticketed events and venues, like stadiums, trains, and other physically limited spaces.

One of the biggest barriers to mainstream NFT adoption is the usability hurdle of working with blockchains. With our latest integrations, Auth0 Lab seeks to make it easy. Developers can query a user’s NFTs and incorporate them as identity data in their applications, even controlling access based on a user’s ownership of an NFT. We’re excited to see how developers use these new tools when implementing web3 functionality into their applications.

## Token Gating

[Token Gating](https://tokenizedhq.com/token-gating/) is the practice of managing access to resources based on a user’s Web3 NFTs. Notable examples include [‘members only’ communities](https://rarible.com/blog/9-membership-nfts/) of NFT collectors. This exclusivity extends to video games like [Alien Worlds](https://alienworlds.io/), the [largest web3 game](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1266486/blockchain-games-user-number/) at the end of 2022. NFTs are central to the game and unlock certain content, or game locations are only accessible with specific NFTs. [TravelX](https://travelx.io/) is working on another use case around airline tickets.

Token gating is interesting because of the openness of the attestation. Instead of IAM data being stored on a proprietary server, it’s on a public blockchain for anyone to use and see. We’re just witnessing the first experiments in how that data is used. 

## EVM Compatible, Open Source Coming Soon

The current integration works on all [Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) compatible](https://gocrypto.com/en/what-are-evm-compatible-blockchains/) blockchains. This means you’ll have access to NFTs available on some of the largest NFT marketplaces like [OpenSea](https://opensea.io/). You’ll be able to pull from [Ethereum](https://ethereum.org/en/), [Polygon](https://polygon.technology/), [Avalanche](https://www.avax.network/), [Binance Smart Chain](https://www.bnbchain.org/en), and others. EVM blockchains are the oldest programmable blockchains, and the ecosystem is well supported.

The Auth0 Lab team is working on open-source the code so it can be modified and moved to other blockchain platforms. ## Unlocking NFTs for Your Application

### How it Works

The Auth0 Lab [fetch-nfts integration](https://marketplace.auth0.com/integrations/auth-0-inc-fetch-nfts) works by relying on a few other pieces of infrastructure.

1. It utilizes the [Sign in with Ethereum integration](https://auth0.com/blog/sign-in-with-ethereum-siwe-now-available-on-auth0/) that SpruceID released in the Auth0 Marketplace in 2022. This allows the integration to grab a public blockchain address for the user, which is critical to querying an NFT smart contract to know if they own an NFT. If a user logs in with a method other than Sign in with Ethereum, NFTs won’t be fetched.
2. During [setup and configuration](https://marketplace.auth0.com/integrations/auth-0-inc-fetch-nfts?tab=install), specify a list of NFT contracts that you’d like the [Auth0 Actions](https://auth0.com/actions) code to query. You’ll also need to specify an API key for [The Graph](https://thegraph.com/en/), a service that queries blockchain data.
3. With a public key in hand, and a list of NFT contracts to search, the Actions code calls out to The Graph’s APIs to query the necessary NFT contracts. It returns a list of caip-22 asset references that your Action adds to the [ID token](https://auth0.com/docs/secure/tokens/id-tokens) as claims.
4. From there, you can utilize the data in your application to make any decision, like token gating access, that you feel necessary!

Digital interactions are increasingly dynamic as brands accelerate digitization - adding more digital channels and services to cater to consumer demands for convenient and seamless access to services from anywhere. This reality has fueled an explosion of data being collected across a wide array of channels and customer data repositories, which not only makes it difficult for marketing teams to get a single view of customers but also makes it challenging to trust the accuracy of the data.  

When customers cannot be accurately identified, this skews analytics and impedes true understanding of customers, their preferences, and behaviors across all digital properties, which is critical to driving adoption and customer lifetime value. This has sparked a growing need to bridge the gap between marketing and Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM), combining identity and marketing to create a holistic picture of user behaviors. 

### Breaking down silos with customer data platforms (CDPs)

Brands collect customer data across various channels (web, mobile) and systems (martech, eCommerce, customer care) with the goal of extracting insights to enrich the experience. Unfortunately, these customer data sources act as islands creating siloed views of customers, impacting the ability to effectively analyze and personalize the experience.  

Centralizing customer data is the first step toward fueling the understanding of customers. Today, organizations are turning to customer data platforms (CDPs), which serve as master customer data stores. CDPs aggregate customer data across multiple channels and repositories, unifying previously disparate data silos to create unified customer profiles — the customer 360. 

CDPs enable marketing teams to optimize the timing and targeting of offers, communication, and engagement activities by allowing the analysis of behavior across the customer journey. However, without a proper identity verification source, the legitimacy of the data comes into question.  

Because CDPs aggregate previously collected data, it is difficult to know how valid the data is. The data may have been collected in a channel without gaining proper consent, the customer's identity may still be unknown (e.g., anonymous profiles), and/or the contact details have become outdated or were never validated.

### Source of truth: Customer Identity and Access Management

Traditionally, CIAM has been a form of front-line security. However, it has reciprocal value across an organization as it is the front door to your digital services and products. CIAM is how customers adopt and engage with your digital products and services and gives you the means to accurately identify, collect, analyze and secure their data. 

CIAM provides a unified interface for customers to sign up and sign in to your products and services - it is often the first touchpoint at which customers become identifiable. The data that is collected during these events is not only verified through authentication events but can span deterministic data, customer data brought in from other identity providers (e.g., social or enterprise repositories), the devices being used to access services, and the location services are being consumed from.   

This valuable source of truth can be used to connect customer identity across all digital services, including their preferences, usage patterns, and consent. 

### CIAM and CDPs: Powering the marketing funnel

Investment in a CDP is made to better understand customers in order to drive conversions, ROI, customer retention, engagement, loyalty, funnel optimization, and customer experience. Enriching the customer profile with essential identity data across all applications can further accelerate the value of a CDP investment.

Through bi-directional synchronization with CDPs and other martech systems, CIAM data can be used to:

* **Connect anonymous profiles to known customers **by providing verified identity data at signups, such as IP address and device identifiers. The CDP can ingest this data and correlate it to a previously unknown profile. With third-party cookies going away and mobile devices limiting app tracking, this capability is essential for marketers looking to understand their customers’ behaviors across their pre and post-account creation activity and engagement regardless of application or channel. 
* **Enrich user profiles with accurate, customer-provided data.** CIAM verifies users’ identities during registration and login, using identifiers such as email or mobile number. If the CDP detects a change/update, it will update the user profile with the new data.   
* **Power analytics with actionable identity data spanning how, where, and when users are signing up and signing into applications**. CIAM plays a central role in the conversion funnel. The acquisition is tied to signup, and retention is tied to the login experience associated with your digital services. Not having a unified view of these processes and a way to analyze and take action on this data can lead to friction, which creates frustration and leads to lost conversions. By providing a CDP with this data, which in turn is shared with martech and analytics systems, markets can develop a deeper understanding of customers’ behaviors and transaction patterns to identify threats, points of friction, and opportunities for segmentation. 

### Auth0: Unifying and powering existing tech stacks with identity data

At Auth0, we position ourselves as an essential component in the end-to-end digital relationship. This integration enables marketing and digital teams to leverage Auth0 identity data to connect anonymous profiles to known users and enrich user profiles with accurate and up-to-date data.  

As we continue to grow our CDP footprint, our partner integrations will have an emphasis on helping consumer businesses better understand customers and drive conversion. These pre-built integrations, like Tealium, allow customers to configure and deploy a CDP without employing developers to build a custom solution.

Why You Should Integrate Customer Identity and Your Customer Data Platform (CDP)

Marketplace partner Spruce has expanded the Auth0 platform to use web3 wallets as an identity source.

Thanks to the hard work of [Spruce](https://www.spruceid.com/), following their [announcement on March 8th](https://blog.spruceid.com/spruce-developer-update-17/), you can now add Sign-in with Ethereum to your Auth0 tenant via their [marketplace integration](https://marketplace.auth0.com/integrations/siwe). While the debate rages on the value of cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), it’s clear that Web3 technologies have the potential to change the way we authenticate. The [Auth0 Lab team](https://twitter.com/Auth0Lab) has been [following Web3 developments closely](https://twitter.com/Auth0Lab/status/1501984403773394946?s=20&t=_wTmCWDZR0kQifVURed70Q), and we’re excited to promote this new capability in Auth0.

## Adoption

That means those 300 million crypto users (as well as new ones) need a wallet to hold the private keys allowing them to access their currency. 

Diving in, [71 million of those cryptos](https://decrypt.co/89486/number-of-non-zero-ethereum-addresses-record-high-71-million-glassnode) wallets hold Ethereum. This massive adoption has led to an ecosystem of tools to help users leverage the [private keys in their wallets](https://developer.bitcoin.org/devguide/wallets.html) for more than just blockchain transactions. 

While many users lean on [Metamask](https://metamask.io/) for [non-custodial software wallets](https://www.bitcoin.com/get-started/custodial-non-custodial-bitcoin-wallets/) and a gateway for interacting with [Web3 DApps](https://ethereum.org/en/developers/docs/dapps/), other options are gaining market share. [Portis](https://www.portis.io/) and [Torus](https://toruswallet.io/) are other non-custodial wallet competitors.

[Coinbase](https://www.coinbase.com/) is a popular cryptocurrency exchange that creates [custodial wallets](https://www.coindesk.com/learn/custodial-wallets-vs-non-custodial-crypto-wallets/) on behalf of users to hold on to their cryptocurrencies. [With 89+ million verified users](https://www.coinbase.com/about#:~:text=Coinbase%20powers%20the%20cryptoeconomy,%2C%20earn%2C%20and%20use%20crypto.), it’s quickly becoming a trusted option. [Fortmatic](https://fortmatic.com/) is a custodial wallet just for authentication and gives users access to their private key with a traditional email/password flow that users recognize in web2.


[WalletConnect](https://walletconnect.com/) is both a standard and a set of SDKs that help any app connect to any type of Web3 wallet. With over 160 apps listed in its registry, it’s becoming a popular way for developers to get access to users’ wallets.

Transactions on the Ethereum blockchain are also increasingly getting easier to conduct courtesy of tools like the [Ethereum Name Service (ENS)](https://ens.domains/), which, similar to DNS, maps a unique human-readable name to the underlying machine-readable strings assigned to each wallet/account. This name can be used instead of the public key, and many apps know to find the address by looking at the ENS smart contract with a registry of the associated addresses. [With 300k+ users](https://ens.domains/#home-statistics), ENS is a growing trend in the Web3 community that makes it easier for the average person to work with their key.

## Sign-in with Ethereum (SIWE)

Ethereum, along with other blockchains that allow for “[smart contracts](https://ethereum.org/en/developers/docs/smart-contracts/)”, allow for additional authentication data to be stored on the blockchain. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are already being used to grant access to things like [web communities](https://thirdweb.gitbook.io/thirdweb/guides/membership-nft-for-discord), [restaurants](https://coinyuppie.com/empowering-the-membership-club-model-analyzing-the-worlds-first-nft-restaurant/), and [events](https://cointelegraph.com/news/showtime-nft-tickets-take-the-stage-in-2022-connecting-artists-and-fans). When our [Auth0 Lab team](https://twitter.com/Auth0Lab) started looking into Web3 technologies, we realized that smart contracts could be used to store data for [JWT claims](https://jwt.io/introduction), [verifiable credentials](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verifiable_credentials), and other authorization data. All that’s needed is a signature by the private key to prove the user’s ownership of those rights.

In early December 2021, the Auth0 Lab [released a demo](https://twitter.com/Auth0Lab/status/1468974610058137604?s=20&t=6GJfq6iCeKQ_vhonsCgNSw) of what this could look like using Auth0. It quickly [got the attention](https://twitter.com/metamask/status/1471177244450111498?lang=en) of Web3 organizations like Metamask and led to a jump into the [Auth0 Lab Discord membership](https://discord.gg/xkbkz9rZcD), a community open to anyone interested in discussing Auth0 Lab initiatives with the team. 

[Spruce](http://www.spruceid.com/), which builds decentralized identity tooling and [self-sovereign user data storage](https://www.spruceid.com/kepler) for Web3 users and organizations, released a [sign-in with Ethereum (SIWE) integration](https://marketplace.auth0.com/integrations/siwe) on the Auth0 marketplace. Now any Auth0 client can leverage SIWE in their applications.

This activity diagram shows how the oidc.login.xyz server can facilitate authentication. The website in this diagram is an Auth0 application. Like with any OIDC server, Auth0 can augment the data from any additional sources and help manage the JWT. It’s a great way to quickly plug your existing Auth0 application into the growing Web3 user base.

Currently, Metamask, WalletConnect, Fortmatic, Torus, and Coinbase are all supported in the integration.

### Step One: Add the Integration from the Marketplace

From [https://marketplace.auth0.com/integrations/siwe](https://marketplace.auth0.com/integrations/siwe), with a simple click of “Add Integration” and a quick selection of which tenant you’d like to add the integration to, you can get started with your setup.

### Step Two: Obtain a Client ID and Secret

Obtain a Client ID and secret, this can be done with a simple CURL command:

### Step Three: Create the New Social Connection

Login to the Auth0 tenant you selected in Step One and head over to your social connections. A sign-in with Ethereum connection will be on the list:

### Step Four: Configure the Social Connection

Accept the access request by clicking “Continue”, and add your Client ID from Step Two. If your application is a[ Confidential Application](https://auth0.com/docs/get-started/applications/confidential-and-public-applications), add the Client Secret.

Sign-in with Ethereum (SIWE) [is an open standard](https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-4361), led by Spruce with support from the Ethereum Foundation and ENS. It was built [in public](https://login.xyz/) over a number of months with the input of security experts, Ethereum community members, and Web3 projects. Spruce will continue to support their existing work on [numerous libraries for direct integration](https://docs.login.xyz/) and their OpenID Connect Identity Provider Server, which is also [open source](https://github.com/spruceid/siwe-oidc).

Auth0 Identity Platform Now Available on Microsoft Azure

2019 highlighted by $103M funding round and global growth


**BELLEVUE, Wash. – January 28, 2020 –** The [Auth0](https://auth0.com/) Identity Platform, a product unit within Okta, today announced another successful year of business, ending 2019 with a 70 percent increase in overall revenue and customer acquisition, including record-breaking sales in Q4. Under the direction of Eugenio Pace, CEO, and co-founder, the company achieved a consecutive year of high double-digit growth and continues consistent year-over-year growth since its inception in 2013. 

Auth0 celebrated many highlights in 2019, most notably, a $103 million round of [Series E funding](https://auth0.com/blog/auth0-closes-103m-in-funding-passes-1b-valuation/), propelling Auth0 into “unicorn status” with a $1 billion valuation. 

Forrester predicts that the IAM software market will grow to $16.8 billion by 2023. Last week we had our annual offsite in Cabo, Mexico where we shared with all the Auziros where we come from and where we are going with our product. Yesterday, we [announced our new funding](https://auth0.com/blog/auth0-closes-103m-in-funding-passes-1b-valuation/) and I wanted to share some of the same things we talked about last week.

## The Beginning

When we started Auth0 in 2013, there were three important shifts developers were going through related to authentication and authorization:

1. Identity becoming the ultimate firewall with software deployed in the cloud and widespread smartphone usage, and consequently, richer API emergence

2. Developers picking best-of-breed platform and languages

3. Password and data breaches becoming a much more prevalent threat 

Suddenly, implementing your own authentication and authorization layer was not a great idea. Developers were confronted with software deployed anywhere; the user identity flowing throughout multiple services written in different languages/platforms; and the need to implement best security practices to prevent a breach.

## Developer-First, Simple, and Extensible

Given the challenges inherent to building authentication and authorization, our strategy for the first few years was to build a platform for developers that would provide a simplified layer on top of this complexity. At the same time, when we started serving our first enterprise customers, we had to deal with last-mile integration issues and the need to customize the platform for their specific requirements. That was the driver to implement Webtask, our serverless runtime that provides built-in extensibility, in 2014 (even before AWS Lambda was a thing).

We spent a great deal of time building our resources and documentation for developers, not only for Auth0-specific usage but for identity topics in general. We found that there was a huge gap in knowledge, especially with the pace at which cloud computing was evolving, and the need for identity was increasing exponentially. We genuinely wanted to help developers. 

After six years and thousands of articles, quickstarts, and guides, our blog is now read by more than 700,000 developers monthly around the world. From this number, 17,000 of them sign up for a trial every month.

As we have dedicated the last six years to also continually improving our identity platform, one constant has been keeping it developer-centric and relying on our proprietary extensibility capabilities to service our customers’ every identity need. It is this simple, yet powerful, last-mile customization capability that makes us stand out. And it’s evident that our customers take advantage of it, with almost *87% of them extending our platform* using serverless [rules](https://auth0.com/docs/rules) to achieve pretty much any use case you can think of.

## Scale, Trust, and Enterprise Readiness

When we raised our [Series A in 2015](https://auth0.com/blog/another-big-milestone/), we knew we had found our product market fit. We started to see more and more traction in the enterprise and were turning into a "real" company. With more enterprise customers needing our services and signing on as customers, we had to scale our product and organization.

On the scalability front, we’ve had to go from 300 logins per second to 3,000. Today, we handle 2.5 billion logins per month, and have tens of million users registered, securing hundreds of thousands of applications.

On trust and compliance, we’ve grown our Security and Compliance teams and have achieved important certifications, such as ISO 27001 and 270218, SOC 2 Type 2, HIPAA, and PCI.

We made our product enterprise-ready, providing our customers with management tools like our Account Center; developing our Professional Services teams to help customers with the most complex scenarios implement even quicker; we started partnering with System Integrators and other developer-led companies like Twilio, Sendgrid, AWS, and others.

In these six years, we’ve created a new category: a developer-first identity platform that is simple to implement and easy to extend. On top of that, we scaled it and made it trustworthy. So, what comes next for us? 

## Our Vision

Since our inception, we’ve always believed in a single platform to solve all Identity and Access Management (IAM) requirements. We take a very different approach compared to what traditionally has been done in this industry. Developers, the "makers" of this new world, appreciate building blocks that are simple to integrate but that can adapt to different situations.

When we think about how our platform evolves, we want to take the simplicity and flexibility we’ve built for the developer to a new level. Providing end-to-end workflows for the different actors using our software:

- **End Users**: We are all end users of software on the internet. But many idiosyncrasies happen with authentication, mostly because developers are choosing between optimizing between user experience and security as a zero-sum game. We are creating a platform that unlocks this dependency allowing you to increase BOTH. Rather than forcing users to log into applications every single time they want to use them, we enable developers to improve the overall experience and keep customers secure at the same time. Previously, only large companies with extensive resources, with hundreds of dedicated engineers were able to achieve that perfect balance. We aim to democratize this and make it available to all developers in the world.

- **Security teams**: Every company is a software company, which makes hiring security experts more and more challenging. CISOs are looking for ways to automate their jobs as much as possible with the end goal of protecting users’ security and privacy. We want to provide them with a single pane of glass that alerts them and self-remediates any sort of attack.

- **Administrators and IT Professionals**: IT departments and business support comprise the backend of IAM. Their day consists of keeping all systems humming, often amidst a relentless barrage of inbound help desk tickets. They have to deal with things like getting audit logs for compliance, onboarding users to new applications, updating a SAML certificate that might have expired, assigning permissions to access an API, resetting the MFA of someone who lost their device, etc. Now, multiply that by the number of users and applications they have to deal with, and you can understand why it can be gruesome. We can decentralize and automate this work by providing out-of-the-box integrations and self-service tools to create an ecosystem where developers can easily implement those to reduce the resources and costs involved in fielding these requests.

We are building a single platform consisting of building blocks and out-of-the-box customizable experiences to solve use cases for all these people. Our vision is to **provide people with secure access to any application in one-click or less**.

The new funding will give us more fuel that will be used to accelerate investment in all areas. To accomplish the vision we have, we will: grow our Product Engineering teams; continue to invest in our developer-led go-to-market strategy with our Marketing teams; continue to invest in our global expansion to sell our product everywhere; and continue to grow our security, trustworthiness, performance, and scalability practices.

Cross-industry fraud is on the rise. According to the fourth annual [LexisNexis Fraud Mitigation Study](https://risk.lexisnexis.com/insights-resources/research/2018-fraud-study), an increasing number of organizations are encountering fraud that has moved beyond its initial source and is causing damage in multiple arenas.

In 2018 89% of fraud professionals reported cases of cross-industry fraud — a five-point jump over the 84% who reported the same in 2017.

Hackers target particular industries — including insurance, financial services, health care, and even travel — that deal with a high volume of sensitive customer information. In many cases, companies in these spaces don't yet have adequate security protocols in place. As one example, [less than half of insurance CEOs](https://home.kpmg/content/dam/kpmg/ae/pdf/closing-the-gap.pdf)_ believe their teams are fully prepared for a cybersecurity event.

Once hackers obtain information from these targets, they’re able to use it to gain access to other higher-value accounts or platforms and conduct malicious activity across organizations.

This piece highlights the many, complex risks of cross-industry fraud — and offers solutions to help business leaders secure their organizations and end users.

### Cross-industry fraud can have extraordinary effects on end users

The uptick in cross-industry fraud presents a cascade of problems for company management. It's not always something they can isolate and solve for independently.

To start, these types of breaches often have extraordinary, negative effects on end users — relationships business leaders are trying hard to nurture. The ripple effect that occurs when identifying information stolen and used in cross-industry fraud makes it very difficult to detect where the breach originated and where it could move next.

This situation is further complicated by the fact that [83%](https://www.cyclonis.com/report-83-percent-users-surveyed-use-same-password-multiple-sites/) of people use the same password for multiple sites. In many cases, hackers who obtain a username and password are able to move quickly by recycling them.

[Credential stuffing](https://auth0.com/blog/credential-stuffing-is-a-persistent-threat-to-your-users/) and [credit card skimming and shimming](https://www.experian.com/blogs/ask-experian/shimming-is-the-latest-credit-card-scam/) are two primary means by which hackers take sensitive data from its initial source and use it across numerous platforms.

In our [prior post](https://auth0.com/blog/credential-stuffing-is-a-persistent-threat-to-your-users/), we described how cyber thieves use credential stuffing for a mass of login attempts at once. While these attacks are only successful about [3%](https://qz.com/1329961/hackers-account-for-90-of-login-attempts-at-online-retailers/) of the time, they quickly add up. According to Quartz, [91%](https://qz.com/1329961/hackers-account-for-90-of-login-attempts-at-online-retailers/) of login attempts on e-commerce sites are credential-stuffing attacks, followed by 60% on airline sites.

[Credit card skimming and shimming](https://www.experian.com/blogs/ask-experian/shimming-is-the-latest-credit-card-scam/) (a newer technique designed to lift information from chip cards) is another method. When consumers make a purchase or visit an ATM, hackers are able to obtain credit card information and then sell that information on the dark web or make fraudulent purchases in numerous other industries.

In all sectors, cross-industry fraud brings with it a hefty price tag. In the same [LexisNexis study](https://risk.lexisnexis.com/insights-resources/research/2018-fraud-study), 80% of organizations reported that cross-industry fraud cases took a moderate to high financial toll on their businesses; more than half said they experienced extreme or high financial impact.

In turn, these unexpected costs can translate into an increase in the price of services for customers — a vicious cycle that punishes them rather than the hackers who are causing the problems in the first place. When you're trying to build trust, fraud in any form — even if it originated elsewhere — can do you harm.

### Improving identity management to reduce cross-industry fraud

As cross-industry fraud continues to increase, it’s up to organizations to put security measures in place to protect their data and their consumers from these sorts of attacks.

**1. CLOSELY MONITOR ALL USERS WITHIN YOUR SYSTEMS**

A recent survey unveiled that [62% of employees](https://www.esecurityplanet.com/network-security/62-percent-of-employees-have-access-to-data-they-shouldnt-be-able-to-see.html) recognize that they have access to company data they believe they shouldn’t see.

One of the best ways to protect business-critical information from unwanted eyes begins with implementing better [user management](https://auth0.com/user-management). Cutting-edge user management tools and processes will help you exercise greater control over who’s able to access business-critical information.

A solution like [Auth0](https://auth0.com/), for example, allows your admins to closely track all of the users working with the company's systems and flag erratic behaviors, such as multiple failed login attempts. These admins can also grant permissions for specific users to access more sensitive data — while restricting the permissions of others.

**2. INVEST IN ANOMALY DETECTION TO IDENTIFY SYSTEM-WIDE THREATS**

It can take a long time to detect security breaches or threats. [According to the Ponemon Institute](https://securityboulevard.com/2018/07/survey-finds-breach-discovery-takes-an-average-197-days/), discovery takes an average of 197 days, which exposes your organization and your users to many vulnerabilities.

Having a solution like [anomaly detection](https://auth0.com/docs/anomaly-detection) in place can alert you to unusual activity immediately.

Auth0’s anomaly detection feature allows for brute-force protection and breached password detection, both of which you can easily turn on and customize from the main Dashboard view.

Brute force protection mitigates the risk that a hacker will push their way into your system by repeatedly iterating on a password until s/he finds the correct match, and breached password detection notifies your users when their credentials have been leaked by a third party data breach. In both scenarios, admins can block access and investigate the situation further.

**3. DO AWAY WITH PASSWORDS**

While the burden of identity protection falls largely on a company’s IT team, some of the effort rests with your users and customers. In an ideal world, they’d [update their passwords when prompted](https://www.pcmag.com/news/362566/35-percent-of-people-never-change-their-passwords) (according to a new study by The National Institute of Standards and Technology) to ones that are longer and harder-to-guess.

Yet when users do make password changes, they’re often just slightly altered versions of their previous passwords (think something like “Password1” instead of just “Password”) — which leaves them just as vulnerable to attacks. [A new report from SplashData](https://www.securitymagazine.com/articles/89694-the-top-100-worst-passwords) shows that the two most popular passwords in 2018 were simply “123456” and “password” — essentially an open door for cyber theft.

Rather than counting on your users to keep themselves secure, institute streamlined login processes that also offer added security.

[Auth0’s Passwordless](https://auth0.com/passwordless) allows users to log in using codes that are sent to their mobile phones — meaning they don’t need to remember or frequently update a password. What if people still insist on passwords? [Auth0’s Breached Password Detection](https://auth0.com/breached-passwords) will alert you and your users immediately if their credentials are leaked.

### Update your legacy systems to mitigate the risk of cross-industry fraud.

Fraud isn’t going anywhere. Even as security measures improve and technology advances, hackers will be motivated to rise to the challenge of stealing information and conducting malicious activity.

Trusting elections is tough when more than [two-thirds of Uruguayans surveyed](http://en.mercopress.com/2017/12/31/corruption-in-uruguayan-government-very-much-extended-says-opinion-poll) believe that their politicians are corrupt, nonprofit [MiVoz](https://mivoz.uy/) sees an answer in injecting innovative technology into the election process.

“The political part of our society is really old — 200 years. We were thinking that the main reason democracy exists is so that people can really feel that they are living in the society that they want”, says [Leonardo Giovanetti, Technical Leader for MiVoz and the Digital Party](https://www.linkedin.com/in/leogiovanetti/).

Social media has programmed people to trust information found via their social networks for both good and bad outcomes. What if that interaction, trust, and energy could be harnessed in a way that allowed each voter to have a say in each political decision, instead of waiting years to weigh in during the election of a representative?

MiVoz is hoping to prove that direct democracy doesn’t have to be unwieldy or even time-consuming. By creating an effective and secure digital platform, taking part in democracy could become a more seamless part of modern lives.

## Mending Trust with Digital Values like Transparency

But changes to long-established institutions and processes can take time.

For the initial phase, MiVoz is targeting Uruguay’s National Elections of 2019 and the following year’s departmental elections. They only need to sign up 30,000 people to secure a representative who will vote in accordance with how citizens vote on MiVoz’s online platform.

“We're intending to promote the usage of an online platform to bring up participation levels and to bring transparency to decision-making on financial reports, which is something that political parties here in Uruguay have lost,” says Giovanetti

As a nonprofit, MiVoz needed the most efficient and low-cost method of securely authenticating voters. But the big issue was trust. Based on past experience with political parties, citizens in Uruguay were reluctant to place their trust in yet another political party.

“We really want to let people know that they can use the tool that we're providing because it's really safe because one vote needs to correspond to one person. Auth0 was really a blessing from my perspective because it's really the best way to go,” says Giovanetti.

While MiVoz is still exploring fully digital means of uploading and validating voter credentials, currently, government-issued identification will be used to validate each voter in person via various locations throughout Uruguay. After that initial effort, Auth0 will securely authenticate voters as they sign in to access MiVoz’s platform.

## Encouraging Participation through Collaboration and Delegation

The initial rollout is focused on the 2019 elections, but later plans include the ability for voters to weigh in on each decision their representative faces — including the possibility of delegating votes on topics like energy or education to close friends. “No one knows everything about every single topic,” says Giovanetti. “We're trying to provide the right tools for people to really represent themselves, sometimes through a trustee who can make a better decision than ourselves because of their background.”

Originally, MiVoz tried DemocracyOS for collecting votes, but after exploring their voting process, they shifted to Sovereign’s decentralized platform. In addition to encouraging collaboration and discussion through tools like Discourse, MiVoz plans to store credentials using blockchain accessed via an Auth0 plug-in.

“We're really passionate about making democracy for this millennium. We’re looking to involve people instead of having them vote and forget about it, but still complain on Facebook or Twitter. Our idea is to put up a platform that could really bring people together for new causes for democracy in their society.”


Nonprofit MiVoz Hopes to Upgrade Democracy with Auth0
