With growth as a priority, the Maven team required a secure, reliable identity solution. It turned to Auth0 from the start.

AI frees human ingenuity

“The average company spends about $42 per customer support interaction,” says Fernando Trujano, Founding Engineer at Maven. “If we can answer most queries autonomously, we can free up humans for interactions that require human creativity.”

Today, Maven powers customer support for more than 40 companies, including publicly traded enterprises like Tripadvisor. Its AI agents answer up to 93% of user questions using both internal and external company data.

Securing agents with identity

Identity is crucial for AI platforms like Maven. “Our agents have access to a lot of sensitive data and take actions,” says Fernando. “Maven is designed to be traceable, compliant, and governed by default, with built-in controls that bring determinism to AI workflows. We needed a secure identity and access management solution to safeguard every interaction.”

Building identity management in-house, however, wasn’t practical. “We didn’t have the capacity to dedicate a full-time team to security, to always be on top of the latest controls,” says Fernando. It knew Auth0 by reputation as a trusted, developer-friendly identity provider. “Having a partner we could rely on, not just at 500+ the beginning, but also going forward as we expand into more complex use cases, was important.”

Right agent, right access

Maven uses Auth0 to authenticate and authorize three types of identities: customers, employees, and non-human agents. Role-based access control ensures each user type has access only to the data and functions they need, limiting risk. This principle of least-privilege access is central to the platform. “We want to minimize the blast radius in case something goes wrong,” says Fernando. “We may give access to someone so they can review conversations, but limit that access so they can’t change the way the agent answers. With Auth0, we can do that without having to build any of that functionality ourselves.”

Every workload, whether run by an AI agent or human, operates under precise, auditable permissions. Take onboarding an employee. “We can use the Auth0 dashboard to create the original admin, then permit those admins to invite other members to the organization,” says Fernando. “We then assign individual roles, like owner, admin, or reader, through Auth0, empowering users to safely manage changes to the internal dashboards and AI agents. Developing these features in a secure, compliant way with a custom solution would have added several more weeks of engineering effort.”

Compliance taken care of

Auth0 supports identity-related compliance controls that are core to Maven AGI’s systems. “These standards ask a lot of questions about how we do authentication and authorization,” says Fernando. “Auth0 supports the identity-related requirements and helps ensure we follow security best practices in that layer, which lifted a significant burden from our team. Having a trusted partner for that core component was crucial for securing larger enterprise contracts that required those guarantees.”

Simplifying identity management at scale

Maven’s developers benefit from Auth0’s extensive integrations. “A Spring Boot integration was already available that we could use. We just configured a few keys,” says Fernando. “The user management tools are also really helpful. We have a trusted UI that we can use to fix common issues, and we know that there are audit logs throughout.”

As the business grows, Maven values the ability to support more complex enterprise requirements such as SSO and SCIM. “In one case, a customer required employee access to be managed through Okta, rather than social logins. With Auth0 in place, we could enable secure SSO quickly and easily. It was as simple as checking a box in a dashboard. Given the variety of integrations required – Okta, Entra, ADFS, and Custom SAML – and the high stakes for security, each integration would likely have taken over a week to build manually, plus ongoing maintenance.”

A platform for growth

Maven launched with support from the Auth0 for Startups program, which provided discounted services and guidance. As its operations become more complex, the company looks forward to continuing its growth with Auth0. 

“We’re especially excited about Auth0 for Agents,” says Fernando. “Anything that simplifies integration and adds even more security at different layers is valuable to us.” Critically, the business has gained more time to focus on its core strengths. “Identity and authentication are extremely important for the company as we concentrate on building the most effective AI agent platform. Auth0 gives us a secure, scalable identity foundation so our team can stay focused on advancing agent capabilities and customer outcomes.”
